Vintage Japanese Yukata Cotton Pillow Cover with Tatami Design

Tamarind Living

Design: A vintage hand-dyed yukata cotton pillow cover in traditional indigo and white takes its design inspiration for its pattern from the Japanese tatami. Backed in white cotton, the pillow cover has a tailored finish with double stitched seams and invisible bottom zipper.

Textile Origin: As cotton became readily available during the late Edo Period, it was the fabric of choice for bathrobes due to its absorbent qualities. With public bathhouses being the meeting point for local merchants of this period, there was no better way to be the talk of the town than donning vogue patterns here. Using a resistance dye technique, paper stencils were made to establish the design with rice paste covering the open areas before immersing in indigo. This affordable design method produced striking patterns against rich blue colors, still the most traditional color combination. Today, yukatas can be found in the finest hotels and onsens while worn by both women and men during the summer months.
