Design: Pair of linen pillow covers with a classic Chinoiserie pagoda print in lime green and melon pink with pink piping. Reverse in a gorgeous silk cotton. Knife edge construction, double stitched seams, and an invisible bottom zipper have been added for durability and a tailored finish.
Textile Origin: As trade between the east and west flourished in the 17th century, gorgeous oriental commodities; including, silks, lacquerware and porcelain entered western society wetting their appetite for exotic treasures. Fascinated by this ancient far away land, Europeans designed “Chinoiserie” fine decorative objects depicting their fairy tale vision of what they imagined the Orient to behold. Limited to their imagination and explorers’ famed tales, imagery distinguishing one individual culture from another was blurred, but focused rather on their joyful interpretations. Exotic leisurely scenes of nobles and maidens, shaded by parasols and evergreens, gracefully lounging in fanciful gardens with elaborate birds, creatures, and pagodas in the distance emerged as classic Chinoiserie images. In the 18th century across Europe, every surface imaginable from porcelain, furniture, tapestries, architecture, wallpaper and garments were covered in Chinoiserie imagery. Chinoiserie scenes have remained in style now for centuries with new whimsical interpretations of life in the Orient continuing to emerge by contemporary designers providing a perfect balance of sophistication and playfulness to your space.
